I never thought I would cycle again. I firmly believed my cycling days were over. While I enjoyed the social atmosphere at For Brian, I preferred watching others take part in the cycling hub rather than joining in myself.
A Connection to the Outdoors
Walking on Wormwood Scrubs is very important to me. I moved here to be close to the Scrubs, and I am so glad I did. I walk there every day, and it takes an hour and a half to get all the way around.
I never tire of the changing seasons. I love the fresh green growth in spring, the hawthorn, and the cherry blossom. Being outdoors helps me feel connected, calm, and active.
Navigating Life’s Changes
I can’t believe I am turning 80 this year because I certainly don’t feel it. I stay active and have many friends in the area, although I do sometimes struggle with losing things or finding the right words I want to say.
I am a fiercely independent person and, until recently, I lived alone. Sharing my space with someone else has taken some adjustment, although I value the companionship very much. I have always tried to see life as glass half full.
When I was younger, I lived in India and Tanzania, teaching Physics and working with WaterAid. I have travelled widely, including a trip to Antarctica. I also transcribed my grandfather’s diaries about his adventures with Peter Scott.
I have always valued my freedom and prefer not to feel as though people are fussing over me or restricting my independence. That is one reason why For Brian has meant so much to me. Nobody makes me feel different there. I can simply turn up, see familiar faces, share a coffee and a laugh, and feel part of things.

I Have Changed My Mind About Cycling
I really enjoy Erma’ s company. She pilots the cycle, and over time I discovered that I really enjoy cycling again too. She collects us all from home on a Tuesday and a Friday, or I will walk.
The social aspect makes all the difference for me. I enjoy the physical exercise of pedalling, being outdoors, and exploring new places, and meeting up with my new friends is the icing on the cake.
When I met Twizzle, she immediately reminded me of Bumble, the dog I had as a child. Seeing her brings back many happy memories that I had long forgotten. She always welcomes me with a wagging tail. I also enjoy seeing all the dogs running freely on the Scrubs and chatting with their owners as I walk.
Through Cycle Connect I join the regular coffee mornings and walks, parties, and take part in adventures like cycling in a large group to Kensington Palace and riding different types of cycles in Morden Hall Park.
Friendship and Community
The most important part of joining Cycle Connect has been the friendships I have made. Seeing people regularly means I never feel lonely and always have something to look forward to each week.
Being part of the group has helped me stay connected to my community, continue doing the things I enjoy, and keep discovering new experiences. Cycling has become an important part of my life again. I may be turning 80, but I am still riding, still exploring, and still enjoying life. That feels truly wonderful.
Come and join us on a Friday morning. We meet every week on the wall outside Old Oak Community Centre in Braybrook Street, W12 0AP at 10am, come rain or shine.
